I like spotting the type of cutting edge trends that eventually become conventions and traditions.

that's awesome!

I wasn't thinking about fashion since those are passing trends, and rarely become tradition/convention. I was thinking about trends in interaction design and behaviors.

Like tagging. As soon as I hooked onto it by way of Flickr and Del.icio.us, I knew immediately that tagging would become a new organizing principle used in design. Tagging is one of the major innovations Microsoft Windows Vista will be touting whenever they decide to release it.

Or in interface design, a recent trend has been to enlarge dialogue boxes for things like requests for passwords. Now instead of being proportionate to the rest of the screen, they take up almost a third to half of the screen. It follows my intuition of adding hierarchy of in sizing for passive vs. active and performing immediate tasks. I believe this design style will eventually become convention. We might see this type of design in maintstream stuff maybe 4 or 5 years from now.
